Dell XPS M1530

Postby Sabre on Sat Apr 19, 2008 2:11 pm

So since I have to get a new laptop (My old one was declared dead today at Geek Squad >.>) I won't be able to build myself a new rig for Aion. However, I started looking around at laptops and think I found myself a winner with the M1530. Here's the link, go check it out at let me know what you think~ It's on sale atm for $1,499

Other suggestions are welcome as well~

Dell XPS M1530

Note: I'd get the "Best" setup one incase you're wondering.

kind of an odd screen resolution (you don't see 1440x900 often) but it looks great otherwise.

not that I approve of dell.. bleh.. but it works lol.

I posted this in the tech talk over at AionSource and some of the people have a pretty big issue with an 8600 gfx card. Now, I'm not sure how much more I'll be playing MMOs past Aion, in all honesty I'd love to play Aion as my last MMO and play it long term. And at the same time I need my computer to be an overall solid computer for school work and all that.

I also looked at a HP, which has a 17" screen and a higher resolution (1650x1050 or something like that). It runs with a 512mb 8600M GS gfx card, which has more memory, however less power than the GT on the Dell. But with it I can go for a 240GB hard drive run at 7200rpms, which I'm told is better (Because it runs faster).

Anyway, a lot of this confuses me..Some also told me to look at Gateway. >.>

Thanks for the help guys

well for a laptop an 8600 is pretty good.....ther are 8800s for laptops but u gotta fork up some serious coinage to rock one

graphic memory isnt too big of a deal unless u like running ur games at high res otherwise 256 will still cut it

Well, I could pull off the HP's 1600 dollar price, but getting into the 8800s will cost 2500 dollars including good processors and the features that I'd want in any computer. So really they cost about 800-1000 more for the upgrade in the card and 2"s of monitor

Well hook it up with the links! Haha and I looked into Gateway, they use 8800s, however my dad is all about the "top line" computers, such as HPs and Dells and stuff. He wants an established name with it too lol

I've always been a toshiba fan (typing on one right now~)

but yeah, I wouldn't spend more than 1.5k on something that'll be 500 bucks in 6 months. I did it once with an alienware (before Dell bought them... ok so it was a $_$ highschool graduation gift), will nevar do it again! Not to mention, its graphics card died on me a couple months after the warranty expired, and nobody was ever able to find replacements for them. Alienware didn't make/sell them anymore.

my advice : get something good, but not overpriced-good. The absolute "latest and greatest" always has a price tag MUCH higher than what it's worth, simply because us geeks like to show off our giant epeens. Getting something just-below the best is often the best deal that'll last you the longest with the least risk.

well....my sony is 8400M GT 256MB nvidia, it works just fine.

As myrad mentioned, you should get a good laptop but dont shoot too high....think about murphy's law....computers will be 2 times faster in 2 years. save the money you have left over for the next computer so to speak. (thats why i bought a sony over a macbook pro)...please no bashing. i didnt buy the mac.

if you buy a laptop though, i think a 15-15.4 inch screen is big enough...cos 17 wont be portable at all basically. its your choice; i am sure you will get something good.

Part of me is even thinking to wait a bit to pick up a new laptop, because the only reason I "need" a computer atm is to do online posts for an online class and write a paper here and there, which I can now do on my dad's old laptop. This Dell deal will save me $599 until May 2nd, however I know that it won't suddenly become $2100 after May 2nd, they'll just come out with a new deal. What I'm wondering now is, should I wait a few months, maybe even unti after summer, to pick up a new computer and hope by then that the price for this same computer has dropped dramatically, or a better, faster laptop has come out or dropped in price (Like the M1730, insane...) to around $1500-1700?

I'd wait!

If you see a super good deal at some point, go for it.. but waiting is good if you can. :p
